Google URL Shortener

Published on January 09, 2023

Google URL Shortener, or goo.gl, is a tool created by Google that allows users to shorten long URLs (web addresses) into shorter, more manageable links.

A Google URL shortener is a tool used to reduce the length of a URL. It does this by taking a normal-length URL and creating a much shorter version. This is done by utilizing a redirect that forwards the user from the short URL to the original long URL. Shortened URLs are often used in social media posts, email messages, or other communications to make it easier to share a link without taking up a lot of space. To use a URL shortener, simply paste the original full URL into the form field and click ‘Shorten’. The URL shortener will then create a shortened version of the URL and provide you with both the full and shortened version. This shortened version can then be copied and pasted anywhere you’d like to share it.

These links are easier to share on platforms such as social media, email, and SMS. By using the goo.gl URL shortener, users can track how many clicks different links receive, which is important for measuring the success of campaigns. Google first released goo.gl in 2009, when the web was becoming increasingly crowded. URL shortening services enabled users to share links more easily. Since then, Google has updated the service with new features, such as the ability to track clicks and measure the success of campaigns. In 2017, Google announced that it was discontinuing its URL shortener and replacing it with Firebase Dynamic Links (FDL). FDLs are designed to simplify the process of sharing links across multiple platforms and devices. They are triggered by a single link, which is used to share the same content regardless of where users access it. There are also several free URL shortening services available, such as bit.ly, TinyURL, and Rebrandly. These services can be used to shorten URLs and track clicks, but they are not as comprehensive as goo.gl or FDL.
